Pre-Season: The Work That Nobody Sees 🏉
Share
When the final whistle blows on one season, the next one has already begun.
Pre-season isn’t about lifting trophies or winning finals. It’s about putting in the work long before anyone is watching. Every training session, every sprint, every pass and every tackle is another step towards becoming a better rugby player.
The players who make the biggest improvements aren’t always the most naturally talented. They’re often the ones who are willing to do that little bit extra.
Rugby Camps: Learning From New Coaches
Rugby camps are one of the best ways to develop during the off-season.
They give young players the opportunity to train with different coaches, learn new skills and play alongside children from other clubs. Every coach has a slightly different way of teaching the game, and every session offers something new to take back to your own team.
Whether it’s improving passing, decision-making, footwork or confidence, rugby camps are a fantastic way to keep developing while having fun.
Most importantly, they remind players why they love the game.
Don’t Stop At Club Training!
One or two club sessions each week are a great foundation, but improvement doesn’t stop when training finishes.
Adding an extra skills session each week can make a huge difference over the course of a summer.
It doesn’t need to be complicated. A local field, a few cones and a rugby ball are enough to work on:
- Passing off both hands.
- Catching under pressure.
- Footwork through cones.
- Acceleration and sprint technique.
- Kicking practice.
- Fitness and conditioning.
The more times you repeat the basics, the more natural they become when match day arrives.
Training At Home
Some of the best improvements happen in the back garden.
A wall can become your passing partner. A tackle bag can help improve body position. A few cones can create an agility course. Even spending ten or fifteen minutes a day working on simple skills soon adds up.
Small, consistent sessions are often more valuable than one long session every few weeks.
Progress is built through repetition.
The Extra Effort Makes The Difference
Every player wants to improve, but improvement comes from what happens when nobody is watching.
Turning up to every session.
Working hard when you’re tired.
Practising the skills that don’t come naturally.
Running one more sprint.
Throwing one more pass.
Those little moments don’t seem like much on their own, but over weeks and months they build confidence, ability and resilience.
When the new season kicks off, the players who have embraced pre-season often find themselves faster, stronger and more confident than they were just a few months earlier.
Enjoy The Journey
Pre-season should still be enjoyable.
Train hard, learn from every session, make new friends at rugby camps and challenge yourself to improve a little every day.
The results won’t appear overnight, but every bit of extra effort is an investment in the player you’re becoming.
At AT15 Rugby, we believe grassroots rugby is about more than winning matches. It’s about building confidence, developing skills and creating memories that last a lifetime.
So grab a ball, get outside and make this pre-season count.
See you on the pitch. 🏉
